Question Remote Access Connection Manager

I have just spent over 2 hours at a mate's house trying to sort his computer, but I have to admit defeat. He would do it himself, but the whole crux of the matter is he can't set-up his internet connection.

I thought it would be an easy matter to just add his ISP details in the "New Connection Wizard". But no, it won't have it.

1) New Connection Wizard - NEXT {OK}
2) Connect to Internet - NEXT {OK}
3) How do you want to connect to Internet? Set up my connection manually - NEXT {OK}
4) How do you want to connect to Internet? Connect using a dial-up modem {NOT AVAILABLE}

The only option available at Step 4 is the Broadband Connection.

I tried various other ways of adding a connection and the same thing occurs. It all seems to point to the same mistake - Error 711 (Remote Access Connection Manager). I have not heard of this little blighter, and without a filename I can't even give him an uncorrupted version, if that is what's needed. I traced the origin of the RACM and it was "Stopped" but trying to turn it on again resulted in Error 5 - Access Denied.

He recently had the Sasser Worm, but that has been cleaned from his system with a Sophos patch download. He also has a message that appears after booting up that the Pager doesn't work. Is that connected to his problem?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Re: Remote Access Connection Manager

Microsoft has a lot to answer for. It seems that the professional version is custom made for Broadband users - my machine was custom made by a friend who made sure my original modem dial-up connection worked. I'll forward this series of posts to him and see if he knows whats going on.

Might be worth trying this link here, Microsoft have encountered this and suggest a reinstall of SP1 will solve the problem, trying to sort out same thing at the moment however and this didn't fix, so let me know and if I find another solution I will post it here

Re: Remote Access Connection Manager

Just to note that I had the same problem after originally upgrading to xp and the solution was the one in D-A-L's link (as well as the microsoft page)

Being the registry edit of RasMan: deleting file 25 & 26.

That took care of the problem for me.

At the point of the upgrade there was no service pack installed.
Just makes me wonder if you need to uninstall sp1 before editing the registry?
